What webmaster career track is for me?

That is a big question. First you need training, lots of training. Generally you need a technical degree in web page design, web development, or webmaster. Additional training is recommended as you move into lead or senior level positions. The lead and senior level positions generally require an additional bachelor degree along with technical training and a few years of related experience.

Secondly after a technical degree you'll need to evaluate what areas above of the particular webmaster career fields you really want to pursue. Do you like graphics, drawing, and page design and layout. You'd want to consider the Graphic Artist approach maybe. Perhaps you like Html coding, some Javascript, maintaining webpages, graphics, web page design and layout. Now you might consider the Web Designer route. If programming is for you go for the Web Developer. If marketing, advertising, and the web is your fancy I'd take another look at the Internet Marketing Specialist webmaster career option.

Lastly you need to dig-in into the area you've chosen to be the expert in. If you can, land a entry-level job in that webmaster career area and get on-the-job experience. In any case really expand your technical know-how in your chosen area. Look at certifications! All of these areas have numerous certifications you can get. Finally pursue a four year degree in an related area to the webmaster career area you've chosen. For example, work towards a bachelor degree in marketing if your chosen webmaster career area is Internet Marketing Specialist. This added degree, expertise, and professionalism will allow you to land a higher paying Internet Marketing Manager position for example.

What if I really want to be a webmaster?

If your heart is really set on being a webmaster pursue a entry-level job where the job title is 'Webmaster'. Smaller to medium size companies sometime apply a catch-all title of Webmaster to a position where YOU WILL BE the webmaster for their company. You'll have a smorgasbord of responsibilities so be prepared to work hard to earn and keep that title. If you're weak in web design and page layout you'll need to work on that. Perhaps you know nothing about search engine marketing...be prepared to learn ... and fast. You don't like programming...you'll need to learn to like it:) No team skills and leadership skills...improve on that. Also you should be prepared to work towards a bachelor degree in a related field.

How can I be a better webmaster?

To be a better webmaster look at the areas where you are weakest in or know little above.

If you are weak in programming take a programming class in a web language that you can put to immediate use on your current website. If you have poor communications skills take a speech class. Have trouble with web page design take a design course. Have problems with creating that dazzling graphic for your site take a Photoshop class. Can't get anyone to click to your website better look into search engine optimization techniques. Need to get people to work together and communicate about web projects take a team management class.

Don't forget about certifications. There are certifications of all kinds in all different areas. Finally, if you can pursue that related bachelor degree the advanced degree will allow you to move up the webmaster career ladder and you'll make more money too!
